Riley’s 1-under Leads the Way on Day One at Stanford Intercollegiate

STANFORD, Calif. — Junior Brooke Riley buried five birdies on the back nine and the No. 16 Northwestern women's golf program played a combined 3-under after making the turn on Friday afternoon in the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate.
Riley is tied for 11th at 1-under to lead a group of four Wildcats in the top 30.
The Wildcats are tied for third as a team after shooting 4-over as a team on day one of the 17-team tournament. USC is in the team lead after shooting 12-under, while the host Cardinal are in second just four shots in front of the 'Cats.
After making the turn at 3-over following a bogey at No. 9, Riley responded with a birdie on the par three 10th and moved to within one shot of even with another birdie on the par four 12th. A bogey on the par four 14th set Riley back another stroke, but the California native once again responded with three-straight birdies to move into the red and up the leaderboard.
Senior Janet Mao opened the day with the Wildcats' first birdie at the par five first and had a pair of birdies on the opening nine to shoot the a even-par 35. Mao moved to 1-under with a birdie on No. 12, but dropped a pair of shots with bogeys on 14 and 17 to finish with a 1-over and tied for 20th.
Riley's performance on the back nine set the tone for the Wildcats as seniors Stephanie Lau and Monica Matsubara and first year Kelly Sim all shot even par on the back. Lau and Sim are each tied for 29th after shooting 2-over. Matsubara made par on her first five holes before making bogey on five of her next nine, but closed the round with a birdies on a pair of par threes to finish with a 3-over 74.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will begin round two on Saturday at 11:10 a.m. PT alongside Washington and Iowa State.
