EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 8 Northwestern heads east this weekend for another set of duals at the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by Penn, to face nine of the top teams in the country over two days.
On Saturday, the Wildcats will square off against Cornell, NYU, Penn, Temple and Fairleigh Dickinson before taking on Brown, Drew, Columbia and Yale on Sunday.
In the latest College Fencing 360 Coaches Poll released today, the Wildcats are ranked eighth, while this weekend's foes of Penn (9), Temple (7) and Columbia (2) are all in the top ten as well. Yale is receiving the third-most votes outside of the top ten with 32, while Cornell is receiving eight votes and NYU four.
Northwestern is now 20-3 this season and riding a 17-match win streak that includes two sweeps and dates back to the first competition of the season. Last weekend, the 'Cats went 7-0 at the Western Invitational with notable wins over Stanford, UC San Diego and Air Force, who all are receiving votes in the latest poll.
Jacqueline Hua, Alexandra Banin and Sarah Filby all posted perfect records at the Western while Anna Tolley, Lucia Procopio, Sharon Chen and Isabella Min came one win away from spotless performances as well.
Filby will not travel to Philadelphia this weekend with the Wildcats, but the team will see the return of junior Yvonne Chart, who was previously away at an international competition.
Northwestern already faced Cornell and Penn this season at the Elite Invitational, defeating the Big Red, 22-5, but falling to the Quakers in a tight 15-12 contest. The 'Cats also took on Fairleigh Dickinson at the Vassar Invitational and coasted by the Knights, 21-6.
The Purple and White split their two matchups with Temple last season, defeating the Owls at the Philadelphia Duals, 16-11, but dropping the meeting at the NU Duals, 15-12.
The 'Cats have not met NYU since Jan. 25, 2015, when they shutout the Violets, 27-0, at their home invitational.
Northwestern holds a 5-1 all-time record against Brown, but the two schools have not met in the last eight seasons. NU last faced Drew in 2016 at the Penn Duals, defeating the Rangers, 26-1.
Columbia and Yale bested the 'Cats in back-to-back matches at the Elite Invitational last season, both by 16-11 scorelines, but Northwestern went on to win its next 11 duals afterwards.
Last season, Northwestern participated in just one day of the Philadelphia Duals, defeating Temple, Sacred Heart, Cornell and Johns Hopkins, but coming up short against the hosts Penn in a narrow 14-13 result.
