Curley Earns Roster Spot on U.S. National Development Squad

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern field hockey senior midfielder Elena Curley (Louisville, Ky./Presentation Academy) has earned a roster spot on the 2018 U.S. Women's National Development Squad it was announced Friday by USA Field Hockey.

Curley was one of 34 individuals who participated in three days of training earlier this week at the U.S. Women's National Team Trial held at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She was ultimately one of 21 players who made the cut to earn a spot on the team.

The U.S. Women's National Development Squad accounts for the transitional phase between the U-21 USWNT and the senior USWNT. Many of the trial attendees recently completed their final college season and no longer are permitted to be on the junior team due to age restrictions.

The USWNT Development Squad will participate in four training camps, either in Pennsylvania or Virginia, as they prepare for a tour to Chile from May 15-24. Following that trip, athletes will be reevaluated and, if ready, called up to the senior team starting in September.

Curley recently completed her collegiate playing career, playing her final two seasons at Northwestern after competing her first two years at Ohio University. Her senior year at NU was highlighted by helping the Wildcats reach the NCAA tournament and ultimately reaching the national quarterfinal round by scoring a goal over her hometown school, Louisville, in the team's 3-2 overtime victory.
