RICHMOND, Va. — The Northwestern athletic department plays two games against Bowling Green on Saturday. The volleyball squad picked up the first one, a three-set sweep over the Falcons at the E.J. Wade Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
Football plays BGSU at 6:30 p.m. at Ryan Field.
The Wildcats (10-1) extend their winning streak to nine-straight, the longest since the 2012 squad posted a 11-0 mark to start their season. NU has posted a 32-6 set record this season and has lost only one set since Sept. 1.
Senior setter Taylor Tashima posted her fourth double-double of the season and her second in as many matches. She posted a career high in digs, accumulating 21 to surpass her previous mark of 20. The Wilmette, Illinois, native also picked up 31 helpers in the match.
Chicago's Big Ten Team played neck-and-neck volleyball with BGSU for nearly the entirety of the first set. After a 22-21 impasse, NU went on a 3-0 run to close off the match opener, 25-21.
In the second set, Northwestern was able to dominate their competition. When the Wildcats got their first service opportunity in the second set, first year Lexi Pitsas got the call with the score 2-1. She left the service role after the #B1GCats led 11-2, including three service aces of her own.
The Wildcats hit nearly 90 points better in the second set to take the 2-0 lead with their 25-21 performance. NU held BGSU to a hitting percentage of .000, as the Falcons posted four kills and four errors in the set.
The third set was an amalgamation of sets one and two. The Wildcats and Falcons both found their strides at different points, but NU was able to pull away with a convincing 25-16 finish. The Wildcats were led by Abbott in the set, who accumulated four kills with no errors.
Northwestern will play again on Saturday, finishing up their non-conference slate with a matchup against host VCU. The contest will begin at 6 p.m. CT.
