EVANSTON, Ill. — Hannah Murphy, a three-time IWLCA All-American and one of the best draw control specialists in NCAA history during her time at Massachusetts, has joined the Northwestern lacrosse program as an assistant coach.
Combe Family Head Lacrosse Coach Kelly Amonte Hiller made the announcement Monday afternoon.
"We are very excited to welcome Hannah Murphy to our staff," Amonte Hiller said. "During the interview process, Hannah's perspective, attitude and work ethic really aligned with the culture and philosophy of Northwestern Lacrosse. She is a selfless athlete who is going to be a great coach and mentor for our student-athletes."
A Tewaaraton Watch List selection prior to the 2017 season, Murphy led the UMass midfield unit with 64 points on 47 goals and 17 assists in her senior campaign. She led the nation in draw controls with 212 – a total that stands as a UMass record, an Atlantic 10 record, and the third most in NCAA history for a single season. She also ranks third all-time in career draw controls (522) which also set a UMass record. She earned her third consecutive IWLCA All-Northeast Region honor in 2017 and was picked as the Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year for the third time as well. In the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament, Murphy was chosen as the A-10 Tournament MVP. Murphy was also named to the All-ECAC Second-Team just prior to the All-America announcement.
In addition to her draw control prowess, Murphy finished with 135 goals, 46 assists, 181 points, 147 ground balls and 64 caused turnovers in 84 career games. She led the Minutewomen to four-straight Atlantic 10 championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. UMass advanced past the first round in each of Murphy's four years on campus, claiming a pair of victories to advance to the quarterfinals in her junior season.
"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to work under the effective leadership of Kelly Amonte Hiller and the rest of the Northwestern staff," Murphy said. "I feel immensely privileged and honored to be a part of such a successful program and tradition-rich University. I am looking forward to learning from some of the best in the game and am so excited to be a part of the Wildcat family."
Murphy excelled at UMass under the tutelage of Angela McMahon, a former two-time captain for the Wildcats who helped rebuild the program from 2001-03.
"She is one of the hardest workers I have ever coached in my career," McMahon said of Murphy. "She wants to do anything and everything in order to help the team be successful."
Murphy earned a communications degree and joins assistant coach Tim McCormack and volunteer assistant coach Scott Hiller as alums of UMass on the Northwestern lacrosse coaching staff. McCormack was a three-year starting goalkeeper for the Minutemen from 2009-12, while Hiller was a four-time All-American from 1987-90 and was inducted into the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
