EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Amy Jia fenced in four different events in the July edition of the North American Cup, highlighted by two impressive showings in Junior and Div. I-A foil.
Jia competed in Junior, Div. I-A and Div. I foil, along with representing her club Salle Mauro in the Senior Team Women's foil event.
In Junior foil, Jia finished 4-2 in the pool stage and was ranked 50th heading into the direct elimination round. Despite falling in a narrow 15-12 loss in the second round, Jia finished 72nd overall in a field of 185.
In a field of 96 in Div. I-A foil, Jia started with another 4-2 record in pool play and was seeded 22nd heading into the knockout round. After a second-round loss, Jia finished the event in 41st place.
While Jia did not qualify for the knockout round in Div. I foil, her club Salle Mauro finished fourth out of 17 clubs in the Senior Team Women's foil competition. Salle Mauro advanced in the round of 16 with a 45-21 win, and defeated the fifth seed 45-33 in the quarterfinal. Jia's club was ultimately defeated in the semifinal by the top-ranked seed and eventual champions, PWF.
Jia will be one of eight returning Wildcats to the foil squad for the upcoming 2017-18 season, and will look to build on upon her impressive 24-4 record last year.
