EVANSTON, Ill. — Seven-time NCAA champion Northwestern has earned an at-large bid and will play Albany on Friday, May 12, in the first round of 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Tournament following a 10-9 regular season and runner-up finish in the Big Ten Tournament.
The Wildcats will travel to Stony Brook, New York, to take on the Great Danes. The winner will advance to the second round to take on either No. 8-seed Stony Brook or Bryant on Sunday afternoon.
Albany advanced to the championship game of the American East Tournament before falling to Stony Brook, 14-12. The Great Danes finished the regular season 12-5 to earn an at-large bid and had won seven-straight games before falling in the championship contest. Senior Sarah Martin leads the team with 106 points (61g/45a), while junior Emma Powlin has 70 points (23g/47a).
The Wildcats and Great Danes have met just one time in program history, when they squared off in the quarterfinals of the 2011 NCAA Tournament where the 'Cats claimed an 18-4 victory.
This year marks the 19th all-time berth in the NCAA Tournament for the seven-time national champion Wildcats, and the 14th in Kelly Amonte Hiller's storied 16-year career as head coach of the 'Cats. Amonte Hiller is 39-6 in her career in the NCAA Tournament -- representing the most wins and the best winning percentage in Division I women's lacrosse postseason history -- and this season is setting her sights on guiding Northwestern to an 11th appearance in the national semifinals and eighth national championship.
Game times for the first and second round in Stony Brook have yet to be announced.
