Among the 17 other schools joining third-seeded Northwestern in the Athens Regional are top-seed Alabama, No. 2 Georgia, No. 4 Arizona, No. 5 Baylor and No. 6 Wake Forest. The Wildcats will play Monday's opening round paired with the Crimson Tide and host Bulldogs, beginning at 9:12 a.m. CT.
Every member of the Wildcats lineup in the 5-count-4 format boasts multiple All-Big Ten honors on their resumes.
Two-time Big Ten Player of the Year Hannah Kim and sophomore Stephanie Lau took home First Team recognition this year, and junior Sarah Cho and sophomore Janet Mao were named to the Second Team, while senior Kacie Komoto has earned the distinction three times in her career.
The site of this week's competition is familiar to head coach Emily Fletcher and assistant Beth Miller. The duo guided the 'Cats to the 2013 NCAA Championships at UGA Golf Course, the program's first appearance since 2000, and the start of the team's current run of four straight berths in the final event of the season.
Northwestern raced away from the field last spring to claim the 2016 NCAA Shoal Creek Regional title, the first Regional win in program history. The Wildcats turned in the three best rounds by any team (296-294-297=887) in the event to finish 18 strokes ahead of their nearest competition, led by Mao's individual medalist honors as a rookie. The 'Cats earned a program-best ninth-place result at the 2016 NCAA Women's Golf Championships, hosted by the University of Oregon at Eugene Country Club.
The 2017 NCAA Regionals, conducted at four sites (Albuquerque, N.M.; Athens, Ga.; Columbus, Ohio; Lubbock, Texas) will feature 54 holes of stroke play (five-count-four), with 18 holes each day. In total, 72 teams and 24 individuals were selected to compete in the four NCAA Women's Regional Championships, May 8-10 (18 teams and six individuals per regional).
The top six teams in each region and the top three individuals not associated with one of those teams will advance to the 2017 NCAA Championships, hosted by Northern Illinois University at Rich Harvest Farms, west of Chicago.
Golf Channel's Morning Drive and Golf Central will feature scores, highlights and analysis from the women's regional sites (Monday-Wednesday, May 8-10).
