EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern baseball is heading to the Big Ten Conference Tournament for the first time since the 2010 season after earning the No. 7 seed with a 13-11 mark in league action. The Wildcats will battle second-seeded Michigan on Wednesday, May 24, at 12:30 p.m. CT at Bart Kaufman Field in Bloomington, Indiana. The Big Ten Network will broadcast every tournament game.
Northwestern (24-28, 13-11 B1G) enters into postseason play as one of the hottest teams in the conference having won five straight and seven of its last 10 games. The Wildcats posted series wins on the road over Purdue (May 5-7) and Maryland (May 12-14) before closing out the season with a sweep of Rutgers (May 18-19) at Miller Park.
Head coach Spencer Allen has orchestrated one the biggest turnarounds in college baseball in his second season as the Wildcats' head coach. Northwestern has raised its win total from 15 in 2016 to 24 this year, which includes a six-win increase in conference games from seven to 13 wins. Last season, Allen and the Wildcats won two series compared to seven this year and increased its total winning percentage from .278 to .462.
This will be Northwestern's ninth trip to the Big Ten Tournament. The Wildcats are 7-16 all-time in the conference's postseason tournament. Northwestern went 0-2 in its last appearance in 2010, falling to Indiana and Purdue. The last time Northwestern earned a win in the Big Ten Tournament was on May 26, 2006, with a 8-4 victory over Purdue.
Michigan is ranked No. 16 by D1Baseball.com/No. 15 in the USA Today Coaches' Poll after finishing the season with a 42-13 overall record and 16-8 mark in Big Ten play. The Wolverines are the top pitching (3.22 ERA) and fielding team (.983 fielding percentage) in the conference this season and rank third in team batting with a .285 clip.
Northwestern and Michigan did not play each other this season. The Wolverines swept the Wildcats in Evanston during the 2016 campaign.
