SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Alex Erro went 2-for-4 to score both of Northwestern's run and Josh Davis matched a career-high mark with six strikeouts, but it wasn't enough as Notre Dame edged the Wildcats, 3-2, on Tuesday night.
Northwestern (17-26) received its offensive production from the senior dup of Joe Hoscheit and Matt Hopfner. They each notched an RBI by driving home Erro. The Wildcats were limited to five hits, including three doubles, on the frigid May evening. Erro, Hopfner and Jack Dunn recorded the extra base hits.
Notre Dame (23-23) relied on its pitching and defense Tuesday night. Charlie Vorsheck (4-0) earned the start and went 6.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run and struck out six. Vorsheck retired 13 consecutive batters over the course of 4.1 innings. Sean Guenter picked up his sixth save of the season.
Josh Davis (3-2) earned the loss in his starting effort. After allowing two runs in the first, Davis settled in to go 6.0 innings and ended up striking out six batters for the second consecutive outing. Tyler Lass, JR Reimer and Sam Lawrence combined to throw 2.0-scoreless innings of relief.
The Wildcats got on the board in the top of the first when Hopfner hit his 14th double to the season that scored Erro from second, who reached base with a single earlier in the frame. Notre Dame scored a pair in the bottom of the frame to take the lead.
The Fighting Irish extended their lead, 3-1, in the bottom of the third thanks to a solo home run from Kyle Fiala, which eventually proved to be the difference.
Zeroes populated the score board until top of the eighth. Erro reached base on an error and Dunn doubled to right center to put runners on second and third with one away for Hoscheit. The #B1GCats senior singled to left field to make it a 3-2 game, before a double play in the next at-bat ended the comeback attempt.
Northwestern will travel to Purdue this weekend for a three-game set against the Boilermakers beginning on Friday, May 5, at 5 p.m. CT.
