Northwestern Drops Regional Final at No. 8 Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – Northwestern hung tough with No. 8 California on the Golden Bears home courts, but the Wildcats upset bid fell just short with a 4-1 loss in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament.
The 21st-ranked 'Cats end the 2017 season with a 22-11 record.
The evening started promising with Northwestern capturing the doubles point on the back of a major victory at the No. 1 spot. Following Chris Ephron and Michael Lorenzini's 6-2 win at No. 3, Konrad Zieba and Sam Shropshire, the nation's 80th ranked duo, took down No. 5 Filip Bergevi and Florian Lakat by a 6-4 score. That win put the 'Cats up 1-0 in the match headed into singles.
Singles started out just as well for NU with the Wildcats claiming three first sets, the minimum number of matches they needed to win. California battled back to win all three matches that finished in straight sets at No. 5, No. 4, and No. 2.
The three remaining matches were all tied halfway through their respective third sets, but Bjorn Hoffmann won the final two games at No. 6 over Jason Seidman to put the Bears over the edge.
No. 37 Strong Kirchheimer held a 4-3 lead in the final frame against No. 12 Florian Lakat when their match went unfinished. Kirchheimer (27-11) will participate in the NCAA Singles Tournament in two weeks.
