EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern held off a late charge from visiting Iowa on Sunday outdoors at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center to win 4-3.
The Wildcats (17-7, 5-2) have won six of their last seven.
Iowa won a closely contested doubles point to start the match. The Hawkeyes got a 6-2 win at No. 3 to grab the early advantage, while Northwestern led on both of the other courts. But Iowa's No. 1 team of Josh Silverstein and Kareem Allaf erased a 5-0 Wildcats lead to come back and win 7-5 to clinch the point. Strong Kirchheimer and Dominik Starý led 5-4 at No. 2 when their match went unfinished.
Northwestern quickly regained its footing, dominating in the early going in singles.
Sam Shropshire won his second straight match since returning to the court on Friday. He dispatched Jonas Larsen at No. 3, 6-3, 6-0 to put the Wildcats on the board and tie the match at one.
The freshman Starý followed suit with his third straight win, and 18th overall, to give Northwestern the lead. Starý took down Jake Jacoby at No. 4, 6-3, 6-4, sealing the deal with an ace for match point.
Kirchheimer then put the 'Cats within a point of victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 over Kareem Allaf. The win was Kirchheimer's team-leading 22nd of the season. Iowa got a point back with Josh Silverstein's three-set win over Konrad Zieba at No. 2 to bring the team score to 3-2.
Iowa then tied things up at three with a three-set win at No. 5, bringing the match down to Jason Seidman at No. 6.
Seidman was up to the task, winning in straight sets, both of which went to tiebreaks. The Northwestern sophomore won 7-6, 7-6 for his seventh straight victory to put the Wildcats over the top.
Chicago's Big Ten Team hits the road next weekend to take on Michigan State (Friday, April 14) and No. 15 Michigan (Sunday, April 16).
