EVANSTON, Ill. – After a tremendous showing over the weekend in match play, sophomore Stephanie Lau has been selected as the Big Ten Golfer of the Week, the Conference announced on Wednesday.
The 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, who earned medalist honors her last time out at the Pepperdine Triangular, was a stalwart for the 'Cats during a day where Northwestern split a match play doubleheader with No. 10 Duke in Durham. Lau knocked off reigning NCAA individual champion Virginia Elena Carta 4&3 in the morning, and earned a hard-fought 2&1 victory over 2016 Olympian Leona Maguire, currently ranked as the world's No. 1 women's amateur player.
This is the second time Lau has received the Conference's Golfer of the Week nod, the first coming in October of 2015 after a record-setting performance at the Mason Rudolph Championship. The honor marks the third Golfer of the Week recognition the Wildcats have earned this year, and first of the spring season. Senior Kacie Komoto was recognized on September 14, while junior Hannah Kim was honored on October 19.
The Wildcats will return to stroke-play competition this weekend in northern California, teeing off the Silverado Showdown at Silverado Country Club in Napa.
