Northwestern Drops Series to Michigan State

4/29/2017 2:53:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern fell to Michigan State in the series finale on Saturday, a day after the teams split the first two in Friday's doubleheader.

The loss drops Chicago's Big Ten Team to 17-25 on the season, with a 6-9 mark in conference play. MSU improves to 23-17 and 6-7 in the Big Ten.

The game stayed scoreless through the first two innings. The visitors broke the deadlock in the top of the third, scoring two runs on two hits.

Connor Lind and Jake Schieber gave NU two baserunners in the bottom half of the inning. A wild pitch advanced them to second and third, before Jack Dunn put Northwestern on the board with an RBI groundout that plated Lind. Joe Hoscheit then singled into left field to drive home Schieber and tie the game at two apiece.

Matt Gannon made the start and absorbed the loss for the 'Cats, throwing 4.1 innings. The freshman gave up four runs on six hits and added one strikeout.

Josh Levy entered for Gannon in the fifth with two on base. He struck out two to end the inning, but not before the Spartans added four to increase the lead to 6-2.

Kaplan came through in the bottom of the sixth, singling to center field to score Willie Bourbon and add a third run for the home team.

Michigan State then added three in the seventh and another in the eighth, leading 12-3 until Kaplan made a statement once again.

Following a walk that put Nick Paciorek on base, the true freshman outfielder came to the plate with one out and one on base. He bombed the ball over the left field fence for his fourth home run of the year. His second and third RBI of the day improved his total to 15 on the season.

Ethan Landon picked up the win for the Spartans. The junior came in for visiting starter Andrew Gonzalez after three innings, pitching into the eighth until Kaplan's blast.

Another run in the last frame made the final score 13-5. The Wildcats recorded five hits, and MSU finished with 14.

Northwestern will be back in action on Tuesday at Notre Dame. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT.
