'Cats In Control After 36 Holes At B1G Championships

MAINEVILLE, Ohio – A balanced attack on Day 2 of the 2017 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships pushed No. 15 Northwestern's lead from three strokes at the start of the day, to eight strokes by the time the round was over at TPC River's Bend (Par-72; 6,357 yards).

After 36 holes, the Wildcats are all over the top of the individual leaderboard with three in the Top-6, four in the Top-10 and five in the Top-13 heading into Sunday's third-and-final round in southern Ohio, where the 'Cats will seek their third consecutive Big Ten title and fourth in the last five years.

For the second consecutive day, TPC River's Bend humbled most of the tournament field. Friday's opening round featured only five student-athletes finished under par, with two of them being Wildcats. Saturday's middle round of the competition – which transpired in far better-than-expected weather conditions - included only seven players under par, and three of them represented Northwestern.

Sophomore Janet Mao eagled the 477-yard, Par-5 No.18 to card a 2-under 70 for the day, move to 1-under on the tournament and into fifth place.

Junior Hannah Kim birdied two of her first five holes, rattled off seven straight pars in the middle of the round, and birdied two of her final six to record a 2-under 70 and get back to even par overall, good for a share of sixth heading into the final round.

Kim is joined in sixth by classmate Sarah Cho, who is also at even par after two days of play. Sophomore Stephanie Lau will tee off Sunday's final round in tenth.

Senior Kacie Komoto was the biggest mover on Saturday's leaderboard, posting a 1-under 71, to rocket 30 spots up the list and into a tie for 13th.

As a team, head coach Emily Fletcher's Wildcats were 3-under for the day, one of only two teams to finish under par. Northwestern will open Sunday's final 18 holes with an eight-shot advantage over Michigan State (+5) and a 17-shot cushion over third-place Ohio State (+14). The remainder of the 14-school field is at +21 or higher after 36 rigorous holes.

The 'Cats will be paired with the Spartans and Buckeyes Sunday, with tee times on No. 1 beginning at 9:48 am. ET.
