'Cats Roll Past Milwaukee, 6-4

4/18/2017 6:51:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern tamed the Milwaukee Panthers in a 6-4 win Tuesday afternoon at Rocky and Berenice Miller park behind a strong start from senior Josh Davis.

Davis (3-1, 3.24) pitched 5.0 scoreless innings to earn the win and set a career-high with six strikeouts.

JR Reimer and Tyler Lass threw two shutout innings from the bullpen and combined for three strikeouts. Tommy Bordignon pitched 1.0 inning of relief and Nick Cauley recorded two outs in the ninth before Cooper Wetherbee entered the game for the final out and earned the save.

Joe Hoscheit followed up his Big Ten Player of the Week award with another scintillating outing, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Leo Kaplan also excelled at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run.

The Wildcats finished with eight hits and seven walks. They moved to 14-22 on the season and improved their impressive April record to 8-5.

Northwestern struck early in the first inning after Jack Dunn was hit by a pitch and eventually scored after Hoscheit laced an RBI single through the right side. Dunn doubled the lead in the second inning with a clutch single of his own with the bases loaded to score Kaplan and make it 2-0.

The 'Cats scored three runs in an explosive fourth inning to make it 5-0. Kaplan led off the frame by crushing a ball clear of left field fence for his third home run of year. Ben Dickey, Charlie Maxwell singled before a Hoscheit walk loaded the bases for Jack Claeys. The junior catcher earned a walk to bring in Dickey and a wild pitch on the fourth ball allowed Maxwell to score from second.

Maxwell used his speed again in the fifth inning to steal second for his sixth stolen base of the season. He took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error from the catcher to give the Wildcats an 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, usual reliever Rich Fordon pinch hit for Hoscheit.

In the ninth inning, the Panthers plated three runs to make it 6-4 before Wetherbee entered the game to face the tying run in the batter's box. The lefty finished the day with a strikeout to earn the save.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is back action this weekend with a crucial Big Ten series on the road at Penn State. First pitch on Friday, April 21, is slated for 5:30 p.m. CT.
