Wildcats Host UIC for 2017 Home Opener

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern returns to beautiful Rocky and Berenice Miller Park for the 2017 home opener tomorrow, Tuesday, March 7, when it hosts cross-town foe UIC. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. CT and the action will be broadcasted on Studio N/WNUR.

Northwestern (2-8) picked up its first wins of the campaign last weekend by splitting a four-game series at Santa Clara. The #B1GCats took the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, 7-1, and the finale, 15-9.
 
Left-hander Matt Gannon (0-1, 5.40 ERA) will make his third start of his career.  
 
UIC (4-6) enters the midweek game with Northwestern on a three-game losing streak. The Flames were swept by Missouri over the weekend Earlier this season, UIC traveled to Nashville and won a pair of games at then-No. 7 Vanderbilt.
 
David Cronin and Cody Bohanek lead the team at the plate, hitting .375 and .282, respectively. Cronin paces the club with 15 hits.
 
UIC will pitch right-hander Jacob Key (1-0, 1.59 ERA) on Tuesday. He has appeared in three games and made one start.
 
Freshman Hank Christie was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after throwing complete game on Saturday and leading the Wildcats to a 7-1 win. Christie went nine innings and held the Broncos to one run on six hits, while striking out a career-high four batters. The right-hander did not allow a walk in 32 batters faced.
 
After earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors last week (Feb. 27) for his performance at the Mule Mix Classic, Alex Erro went 7-for-16 (.438 BA) with a double, home run and three RBI. Erro's seven hits on the weekend were a team high.
 
Freshman Josh Levy pitched five innings of relief on Sunday to help Northwestern to its second win of the weekend. He went five-scoreless innings with five strikeouts and only allowed two hits.
 
Junior Jack Claeys has had a breakout start to the season. In nine games, Claeys is batting .357 with five hits, including three doubles and six RBIs.

The Flames and Wildcats are facing each other for the 63rd time with Northwestern holding a 21-40-1 record in the all-time series.
