SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- No. 9 Northwestern persevered through the first day of the NU Duals in South Bend, Ind. on Saturday and collected three key victories against a talented group of opponents.
The Wildcats finished 3-3, besting Wayne State, No. 4 Ohio State and Fairleigh Dickinson. They followed every loss with a win and have the last match of the day against FDU to build momentum into Sunday's slate.
"We had some really strong individual performances today," head coach Zach Moss said. "The next step for tomorrow is to collectively bring our consistency up across the board against an even tougher set of teams."
Northwester honored its 11 seniors in the afternoon before its last match. Alex Kain, Kimmy Fishman, Cindy Oh, Julia Abelsky, Sarit Kapon, Kayla Kelch, Alisha Gomez-Shah, Mandeep Bhinder, Stephanie Chan, Helen Foster and Stella Pointeau were all recognized for their contribution to the team over the last four years.
Yvonne Chart, Cindy Oh, and Pauline Hamilton led the way in each of their weapon groups. Chart went 8-1 in foil, Oh went 7-2 in sabre, and Hamilton went 6-3 in epee.
The 'Cats started the day off with a tough 15-12 loss to UC San Diego. Freshman Abby Tartell had a strong 2-1 showing in her sabre bouts.
The team rebounded in the next match to defeat Wayne State 21-6. Chart and Oh both were a perfect 3-0 while the epee trio of Alex Kain, Shirley Luong and Aahana Chatterjee were all 2-0.
Northwestern went toe to toe with No. 6 Penn, but came just short in a 16-11 effort. Sophomore Maddy Curzon was a dominant 3-0 against the Quakers in sabre.
The Wildcats picked themselves up again and rallied to defeat No. 4 Ohio State 19-8. Alisha Gomez-Shah impressed in sabre against a talented Buckeye squad and finished 3-0.
Facing their third ranked opponent in a row, the 'Cats brought their A-game against No. 2 Princeton and won the foil and epee groups in a narrow 14-13 loss. Chart went 3-0 in foil while Pauline Hamilton went 2-1 in epee and picked up a win against Kat Holmes, a member of the 2016 Olympic team.
After a long day of fencing, Northwestern ended on a high note, dominating Fairleigh Dickinson 21-6. Sacha Bazzal, Abby Tartell, Mandeep Bhinder, Lucia Procopio and Sarit Kapon all finished 3-0.
The #B1GCats are back in action tomorrow against UNC, No. 8 Temple, No. 5 Penn State, Stanford, No. 3 Notre Dame and Cleveland State, in that order, as they close out the NU Duals.
