EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 23 Northwestern faces a pair of stiff tests this weekend when it travels to face a pair of top-10 opponents.
The Wildcats square off against ninth-ranked Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. Friday in Nashville before traveling back to 10th-ranked Duke for a rematch at 11 a.m. Central time Sunday.
Northwestern brings a 4-1 record into this weekend's action. The 'Cats narrowly missed out on earning a trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship last weekend. NU earned a 4-3 win over Tulsa in its opening match of ITA Kick-off Weekend last Saturday before being narrowly edged out by host Duke by the same score the following day.
The Commodores (2-0) are paced by Astra Sharma who is ranked No. 2 in the nation in singles, while Sydney Campbell is No. 19 and Christina Rosca is No. 28. In doubles, Campbell and Rosca are ranked No. 53. Vanderbilt earned a trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship last weekend by posting 4-0 wins over Virginia Tech and Kansas. Last year, the Wildcats were clipped by fifth-ranked Vanderbilt, 4-3, in Evanston Feb. 14.
Duke (3-0) has a trio of nationally ranked singles players in No. 14 Meible Chi, No. 34 Chalena Scholl and No. 76 Kaitlyn McCarthy. The Blue Devils have posted nail-biting 4-3 wins over the Wildcats in each of their last two meetings. In addition to last weekend's matchup, Duke earned a 4-3 win Jan. 31 of last season in Evanston.
Northwestern's solid performance last weekend helped it moved up two spots from No. 25 in the ITA team rankings. The Wildcats are led by a pair of nationally ranked doubles teams as Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp are No. 6 while Erin Larner and Lee Or team up for a No. 24 ranking. In singles action, Lipp is ranked No. 104.
