Wildcats Split Doubleheader Against Oklahoma State and UIC

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 13 Northwestern split a doubleheader at Combe Tennis Center on Sunday as it came up short against No. 8 Oklahoma State, 4-1, but defeated UIC, 4-0.
The Wildcats moved to 11-5 on the season with conference play upcoming.
In the first match of the day, the Cowboys took the first point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Konrad Zieba and Sam Shropshire fell to the fourth-ranked doubles team of Julian Cash and Arjuna Kadhe, 6-4. Chris Ephron and Ben Vandixhorn were downed 6-4, while the 51st-ranked team of Strong Kirchheimer and Dominik Starý finished 5-5 against the No. 31 pair of Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza.
OSU added to its lead with wins at No. 5 and No. 4 singles. Vandixhorn lost 6-1, 6-2, to Tristan Meraut at No. 5 while Starý could not get past Artur Dubinski at No. 4, 6-3, 6-4.
Jason Seidman earned a point for Northwestern to make it 3-1 with a dominant 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Mendoza.
The Wildcats were locked into the three remaining matches at the top three singles spots which all entered the third set. Zieba, however, could not hold on to beat No. 69 Kadhe at No. 2 in a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 defeat that clinched the match for Oklahoma State.
Kirchheimer, ranked No. 26, was close to adding a signature win to his resume when his match against No. 18 Cash ended unfinished at 3-6, 6-0, 4-2.
In the second match against UIC, the 'Cats got off to a quick start in doubles when Ephron and Michael Lorenzini won 6-0 in just 17 minutes at No 3. Kirchheimer and Starý clinched the point at No. 2 by a 6-3 score.
Lorenzini doubled the lead at No. 6 singles with a smooth 6-1, 6-3 victory. Kirchheimer followed shortly after with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles to make the lead 3-0.
Seidman coasted 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 singles for his second win of the day and clinched the match at 4-0. Starý, Vandixhorn, and Volk all had one-set leads and were close to finishing their matches.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action next weekend when it opens up Big Ten play on the road against 17th-ranked Illinois on Friday before a home match on Sunday against Texas Tech.
