Northwestern Wraps Up Regular Season At Duke Duals

DURHAM, N.C. – No. 8 Northwestern earned three wins Sunday at the Duke Duals in Durham, N.C. to close out its regular season.
 
The Wildcats defeated Air Force, Boston College and MIT while dropping tight decisions to North Carolina and Duke.
 
"The team battled hard through adversity and continues to show a lot of promise as we head into post-season competition," head coach Zach Moss said. "We're excited to test ourselves there."
 
Freshman Amy Jia added another impressive day to her rookie campaign, finishing 10-2 in foil. Sacha Bazzal also went a perfect 6-0 in sabre.
 
The Wildcats opened the day with a tightly contested rematch of their NU Duals clash against North Carolina. The Tar Heels won each weapon group by just one bout in a 15-12 win. Aahana Chatterjee, Alisha Gomez-Shah and Jia all went 2-1.
 
Northwestern rebounded to take down Air Force 17-10 behind a dominant 9-0 sweep from the foil group. Alexandra Banin, Sharon Chen and Jia each posted 3-0 records.
 
The 'Cats rolled on against Boston College, grounding the Eagles 22-5 with a perfect 9-0 in sabre. Emine Yucel, Sacha Bazzal, Julia Abelsky Katie Van Riper, Stella Pointeau, and Jia all finished with a 3-0.
 
The Wildcats picked up their third straight win against MIT, winning 21-6. Anna Tolley, Ella Lombard, Gomez-Shah and Bazzal added to the list of 3-0 performances on the day.
 
Northwestern fell short of the hosts Duke in the last match of the day, 18-9. Van Riper went 3-0 in a close epee contest.
 
The #B1GCats are finished with the regular season and now focused on the USA Junior Olympics next weekend. Five fencers will be competing from Northwestern in the prestigious event.
 
Looking ahead to the postseason, Northwestern will compete at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships in two weeks. The team will look to repeat last year's gold medal performance at the MFCs and take home the fifth championship in program history.
