Five Wildcats Set for Quarterfinals at #Midlands55

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Five Northwestern wrestlers are set for the quarterfinals in Session II of the 55th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Friday night.

Northwestern is in fifth place as a team after the session. Iowa is in first place with 51 points.

Redshirt first year Sebastian Rivera (125) tacked on a multitude of bonus points in Session I, rattling off a tech fall and two major decisions. His final major decision — in the round of 16 — was a 19-5 final over Wisconsin's Johnny Jimenez, seeded 12th in the weight class.

First year Yahya Thomas (141), wrestling unattached, also advanced his way into the quarterfinals in his Midlands debut. His Round of 16 performance was a 8-3 decision over Rutgers' Mike Van Brill, the 11th-seeded grappler in the weight class.

Redshirt first year Ryan Deakin (149), the ninth-ranked wrestler in the nation, also went undefeated in the first session. After a quick injury default by Northern Illinois' Zack Velasquez, he pinned Clarion's Taylor Ortz in 4:04 and logged a 13-1 major decision over Maryland's Alfred Bannister, the 11th seed.

Redshirt junior Johnny Sebastian (174) major decisioned his way through session one, pitching a 9-0 shutout of Jacob Covaciu (Wisconsin) and winning 11-1 over Brit Wilson (Northern Illinois-unattached). He sealed his quarterfinal berth with a 9-3 decision of Rutgers' Jordan Pagano.

Redshirt junior Conan Jennings wrestled a pair of bouts in the heavyweight division, an 18-2 tech fall over Luke Ready (Michigan-unattached) and a pin of Northern Illinois' Caleb Gossett in 5:35.

Six other Wildcats are still alive in the Midlands competition, including first year Tyler Morland (174), wrestling unattached, who posted an early upset of ninth-seeded Ryan Christensen in the opening round via a commanding 11-2 major decision of the Badger.

Session II begins at 7 p.m. at the Sears Centre Arena.
