HAVANA – First year Sarah Filby finished as a quarterfinalist at a junior foil World Cup event on Saturday in Havana, Cuba, and improved her junior foil ranking to No. 73 in the world.
The World Cup featured the top international foil fencers born in 1998 or later. For her eighth-place finish, Filby earned 14 junior international ranking points to vault herself in the international rankings.
The first-year Canadian opened the World Cup event with a 3-2 record in pools and a +10 indicator. Filby defeated fellow compatriot Annie Lin, 5-0, Tianji Lukins of Austria, 5-0, and Ivett Giron Vega of Cuba, 5-1.
In the first direct elimination bout in the round of 32, Filby dismantled Arays Cordero Gutierrez of Cuba, 11-10. Cordero had six junior international points entering the event, and finished the weekend ranked in the top-100.
In the round of 16, Filby enacted revenge on Lydia Casillas of Mexico. After suffering a narrow 5-4 defeat in pools to Casillas, who topped the group with a 5-0 record, Filby earned a hard fought 15-14 victory in the elimination bout. Casillas is ranked 12th in the world in junior foil with 66 international ranking points, and took home the gold medal at the November junior foil World Cup competition in Guatemala City.
Filby's incredible run stopped short in the quarterfinal, when she fell to her fellow countrywoman Ying Cao by a 15-10 scoreline. Cao took third place in the event and is now ranked 51st in junior foil. Cao previously finished in the top-32 at the World Championships in Bulgaria in April this year.
Filby is also ranked 184th in senior women's foil with four ranking points. The first year has impressed so far in her collegiate career, posting a 7-3 record with all ten bouts coming at the Elite Invitational.
The Wildcats are back in action in January in another individual event at the North American Cup in Virginia Beach, Va. from Jan. 5-8. The 'Cats resume collegiate competition on Jan. 14 at the Western Invitational, hosted by Stanford.
