'Cats Complete 2017 Campaign in Big Ten Quarterfinals

11/5/2017 7:47:00 PM | Men's Soccer

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — First year Tommy Katsiyiannis scored Northwestern's equalizer in the 50th minute to make it a 1-1 contest, but it was not enough as top-seeded Michigan scored three-unanswered goals to top the eighth-seeded Wildcats, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament.

'We really gave everything we had in this game," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "It's the way you want to end your season and for the seniors their career. Getting that goal from Tommy Katysiannis early in the second half really gave us new life, but Michigan showed why they are the Big Ten regular season champions with their quality on those last three goals. I really enjoyed coaching this group and with all our good young players I am excited for the future of the program. We will take a week off and then the 2018 season starts for us."

Northwestern finishes the 2017 season with a 7-12-0 overall mark.

The Wildcats held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks and tallied 10 shots, five of which were on net. Mac Mazzola had a team-high three shots with a pair of them coming on target.

The win sends Michigan to the semifinals and improves the Wolverines to 12-4-2 on the season.

Michigan got on the board in the 24th minute with a goal from Francis Atuahene. The Wolverines held the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the half.

Katsiyiannis scored the equalizer in the 50th minute. Mattias Tomasino won a 50-50 ball and headed it to Katsiyiannis, who took the ball into the box and beat the keeper to the back post. The goal was Katsiyiannis' third of the Big Ten tournament and seventh of the season.

The contest did not remain tied for long as Michigan's Jack Hallahan scored the go-ahead goal in the 55th minute. Hallahan added a second goal in the 79th minute. Robbie Mertz scored for the Wolverines in the 63rd minute.
