Fayeulleโ€™s Golden Goal Sends Northwestern to Big Ten Championship Match

11/3/2017 7:08:00โ€ฏPM | Women's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. โ€“ Northwestern is one win away from a Big Ten Tournament championship. The Wildcats beat Wisconsin, 2-1, with a golden goal in the 105thย minute to advance to the team's first tournament championship match since 1997.
ย
No. 2 seed Northwestern (12-6-2) will play fifth-seed Penn State for the program's first-ever Big Ten Tournament title Sunday at 1 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network.
ย
Senior Maria Fayeulle took a feed from junior Brenna Lovera, navigated past two defenders, and put the ball past the Wisconsin goalkeeper for the winner in double overtime at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana.
ย
The goal was the first of the year for Fayeulle and the first for the senior forward since 2015.
ย
Junior defender Hannah Davison scored the first goal of the game for the Wildcats on a free kick from Marisa Viggiano in the sixth minute. The goal was the second of the year for Davison.
ย
The junior midfielder Viggiano moved into a tie for fifth in program history with her 15thย career assist, tying Stephanie Erickson (1994-97). One more will move Viggiano to third.
ย
Northwestern saw its shutout streak of 535 minutes end with a Wisconsin goal in the 65thย minute. The streak was the third-longest in program history and spanned seven matches, including the team's current six-match winning streak.
ย
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem now holds the three longest shutout streaks in program history.
ย
Clem made three saves Friday to bring her season total to 87 and her career total to 339. She made two incredible saves โ€“ one in each half โ€“ to keep Wisconsin at just one goal for the match.
ย
Northwestern was actually outshot 20-10 by the Badgers, but the Wildcats made it count when they needed it, scoring on their only shot in either overtime frame. Wisconsin only got four of their 20 shots on target.
ย
First year Kayleigh Stahlschmidt led the way with three shots in her 45 minutes on the pitch. Fayeulle and first year Kylie Fisher each had two, while Viggiano, Davison, and junior Kayla Sharples took one apiece.
ย
Northwestern and Penn State will meet in a Big Ten Tournament game for the first time since 2014 when the Wildcats upset the No. 6 ranked Nittany Lions in the quarterfinals.
