WESTFIELD, Ind – In a game that lasted more than five-and-a-half hours from start to finish and featured multiple lengthy delays, Penn State came from behind to beat Northwestern 2-1 in the championship match of the 2017 Big Ten Tournament.
The Wildcats held a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute following first year Nia Harris' first career goal, but the game was delayed for nearly two and a half hours before being moved indoors and completed on a turf field at Grand Park.
The break and indoor field rejuvenated the Nittany Lions, who struck twice in the final 20 minutes to secure the win.
Northwestern all but guaranteed an NCAA tournament bid with its two wins in the Big Ten tournament.
The Wildcats took four shots in the championship contest, coming from four different student-athletes – junior Marisa Viggiano, junior Brenna Lovera, senior Grace Orndorff, and the first year Harris.
First year Kylie Fisher provided the assist on Harris' goal.
Penn State took 19 shots but only managed to get five of them on goal. Senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem made three saves.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will officially find out its NCAA tournament designation during the selection show at 3:30 p.m. CT Monday.
