EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern travels to Columbus, Ohio this weekend to kick off its duals season at the Elite Invitational against the top teams in the country.
The Wildcats will face Air Force, North Carolina, Cleveland State, Penn and Cornell on Saturday, and NJIT, hosts Ohio State and Princeton on Sunday. Competition starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday and 7:30 on Sunday.
Princeton and Ohio State finished last year ranked in the top five nationally, while Penn finished sixth. North Carolina and Cornell received votes for the majority of last year's polls.
The 'Cats already competed in two individual competitions this season, first at the Remenyik Open early in October and then at the North American Cup later in the month. The highlights of the fall so far have been the team's top-four sweep of junior epee and junior Maddy Curzon's finalist appearance in sabre at the Remenyik and sophomore Pauline Hamilton's top-16 finish at the NAC.
While the Elite Invitational will be the first collegiate team event for the team's ten first years, head coach Zach Moss still returns 16 letter-winners and ten fencers with over 50 career wins each. Yvonne Chart and Maddy Curzon both also have over 100 total career victories.
Northwestern posted 33 duals wins last season. At the season-opening Elite Invitational in 2016, then a one-day event, the 'Cats picked up a win against Johns Hopkins.
Last year, NU faced every team it will see this weekend except for Cleveland State and NJIT. The team split the regular season series against rivals Ohio State, and defeated Air Force and Cornell twice each.
