EVANSTON, Ill. – After a record-breaking year in 2016, the Northwestern Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is aiming even higher for the 2017 NUDAR Canned Food Drive.
Last year, 7,018 canned food items donated by fans, student-athletes, coaches, and Northwestern staff were delivered to benefit Family Focus of Evanston. That number broke the previous mark by more than 2,000 items, and the goal is to break the record once again.
Fans are encouraged to participate at two basketball games this week when SAAC representatives will be out collecting canned items and taking donations for items.
Those games are men's basketball at Allstate Arena on Nov. 15 against Creighton at 8 p.m. and women's basketball at Evanston Township High School on Nov. 16 against Oakland at 7 p.m. By donating an item or making a monetary contribution at the men's game Wednesday you will be entered into a raffle to win a basketball signed by Coach Chris Collins and a gift card to Wildfire.
Women's basketball is celebrating Willie the Wildcat's 80th birthday at Thursday's game and, in lieu of gifts, Willie encourages all fans to bring a canned food item or donation for the food drive. Fans who donate will be entered into a raffle to win a basketball signed by Coach Joe McKeown and a gift card to Wildfire.
All students, staff, and coaches are encouraged to participate. All teams and staffs will collect their own items for delivery to Anderson Hall on Thursday, Nov. 30 and Friday, Dec. 1.
Family Focus provides parents and their children with critical resources and learning opportunities to encourage healthy development in their communities. The organization provides parents with training and educational tools to support healthy early childhood development. It also supports children and youth ages 6-18 through enhanced educational opportunities programs to explore science, technology, engineering and math, as well as sports and cultural activities that encourage healthy development, self-confidence and the ability to create positive relationships.
