Wildcats Post Perfect Day at Vassar Invitational

11/12/2017 10:41:00 PM | Women's Fencing

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Northwestern swept the Vassar Invitational with a perfect 8-0 record on Sunday, thoroughly dominating the competition.

The Wildcats moved to 13-3 after two sets of duals this season, after rolling through Sunday's foes. In the eight matches, NU finished with a combined score of 171-89.

First year Ashley Gomerman paced the team with a perfect 14-0 record in sabre. Senior Katie Van Riper also went a perfect 9-0 in epee.

Three Wildcats also earned their first career wins at the collegiate level. First year Marta Amador Molina tallied eight wins in epee after missing the Elite Invitational last week with an injury. Her classmate Zhesi Zhuang went an impressive 12-2 in sabre with her first career wins. Senior Sydney Larrier, who joined the team this year as a walk-on in foil, notched ten wins of her own.

In addition to Gomerman, Zhuang and Larrier, five fencers reached double digits in wins on the day. Anna Tolley and Shirley Luong went 11-2 while Lucia Procopio was 11-3. First years Sofia Simontov and Jacqueline Hua went 12-2 and 12-3, respectively, in the second collegiate events of their career.

The first year Wildcats have impressed so far this season, with the seven fencers at the Vassar Invitational combining to go 69-16. Overall, the Class of 2021 is 97-39.

Northwestern opened up the day with a 25-2 defeat of the City College of New York, highlighted by 3-0 sweeps from Gomerman, Zhuang, Larrier, Simontov, Procopio and Stefani Kahookele. The team powered past Fairleigh Dickinson in the second match, 21-6, behind a balanced effort.

Sacred Heart gave the Wildcats everything they could handle behind a solid effort in epee, but they were able to pull out a narrow 14-13 victory behind an 8-1 win in sabre and two wins each in foil from Simontov and Procopio.

NU returned to its dominant form with back-to-back 20-7 wins over Haverford and Wellesley. Amy Jia and Ella Lombard earned their first wins of the day against the Fords.

The 'Cats coasted past Stevens, 21-6 behind sweeps from Isabella Min, and Lombard, Amador Molina and Van Riper in epee.

Northwestern closed out its perfect day with a 24-3 win over Queens and a 26-1 victory over Wagner.

First year Sarah Filby also competed individually this weekend away from the team in the junior foil competition at the November North American Cup held in Kansas City, Mo. Filby made an impressive run to a top-32 finish after going 5-1 in pools and winning two direct elimination bouts as a No. 30 seed.

Chicago's Big Ten is not in action again until the new year, when it will compete in the January NAC in Virginia Beach, Va. From Jan. 5-8. The team will fence collegiately again at the Western Invitational hosted by Stanford on Jan. 14
