'Cats Head to Vassar for Second Duals of Season

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern travels to Poughkeepsie, New York on Sunday for the Vassar Invitational, looking to build on its early season momentum.

The Wildcats will fence in eight bouts, starting at 9 a.m. In order, the 'Cats will face the City College of New York, Fairleigh Dickinson, Sacred Heart, Haverford, Wellesley, Stevens, Queens and Wagner.

In the first weekend of the season, Northwestern finished with a 5-3 record at the Elite Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, with wins over Air Force, Cleveland State, Cornell, NJIT and Ohio State.

"We're a young group and that first meet was a really good test for how we respond to adversity and the challenge of college competition" head coach Zach Moss said. "There were some nerves early but we got better and stronger as the days went on and we're in a position where we know we can beat anybody."

Yvonne Chart finished with 12 wins on the first weekend and first year Anya Harkness tallied 11 wins of her own in her first ever collegiate meet. First year Sarah Filby impressed in foil as well, posting a 7-3 record.

Overall, nine fencers competed in their first ever duals, combining for 29 individual wins.

Seniors Sacha Bazzal and Katie Van Riper both picked up their 100th career win at the event as well, joining Yvonne Chart and Maddy Curzon as the only active Wildcats with 100 or more wins.

Last year, NU swept the Vassar Invitational with an 8-0 record, including a win over then-No. 10 Cornell. Northwestern will face six of the same opponents that it defeated last season on this Sunday.

The Wildcats hold a 53-6 all-time record against the eight foes they will fence at the Vassar Invitational. The program has never matched up against Wagner or the City College of New York. Fairleigh Dickinson is the only school to have any wins in the all-time series, but the 'Cats still hold a commanding 25-6 advantage in that matchup.

"We should win every match there. That's the expectation, but it's not the focus." Moss said. "Our focus is to approach it no differently than any other meet, so each person focuses individually and on building as a team, and works through the mental challenges of a really long day."

The event is the last set of duals for the Purple and White until the Western Invitational in January.
