EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 2 seed Northwestern will host seventh-seeded Purdue in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament Sunday at Martin Stadium. The match will kickoff at 2:30 p.m.
The Wildcats (10-6-2, 7-3-1) look to continue their hot streak of four straight shutout wins to close the regular season. The Boilermakers (10-6-2, 5-4-2) wound up their season with a 2-0 win against Maryland.
The winner will move on to the semifinals, which will be held November 3 at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, and will play the winner of No. 3 Minnesota and No. 6 Wisconsin.
Series History
Sunday marks the second-ever Big Ten Tournament meeting between Northwestern and Purdue. The Boilermakers won a 3-1 contest in the first round at Minnesota in 2007. This is the 21st meeting overall, and Purdue won a 2-0 decision earlier this season in West Lafayette on Oct. 1.
The Road Home
Northwestern entered the final day of the regular season needing a win to lock up homefield advantage in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals and got it, a 1-0 victory at Michigan State. The Wildcats clinched the No. 3 seed with that win, but with Wisconsin's 1-0 upset win over Penn State, NU moved up to No. 2 in the conference standings. The 'Cats are hosting the quarterfinals for the third straight year and are looking for their third trip to the semifinals in the last four seasons.
Awards Season
Northwestern earned four All-Big Ten honors following the conclusion of the regular season. Junior midfielder Marisa Viggiano and junior defender Kayla Sharples were awarded firstteam recognition, while junior defender Hannah Davison was named to the third team. First-year midfielder Regan Steigleder earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team, the fourth straight year the 'Cats have had a newcomer on that list. Senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem was named the conference's sportmanship honoree.
