The 54-hole event is hosted by Dr. Condoleezza Rice, the Thomas & Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy at Stanford's Hoover Institution. Dr. Rice served as U.S. Secretary of State from 2005-09 and is an avid golfer. The tournament is being held at Poppy Hills for the first time while renovation is being done at Stanford Golf Course.
The field includes fourteen schools and 15 teams. Based on the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, they are: No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 8 Stanford, No. 13 NORTHWESTERN, No. 22 Iowa State, No. 23 Florida State, No. 35 Washington, No. 36 Pepperdine, No. 44 San Jose State, No. 48 Oregon, No. 50 Cal, No. 75 Georgia, No. 90 UC Davis, No. 110 Cal Poly.
Located on the famed Monterey Peninsula in the Del Monte Forest, Poppy Hills Golf Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1986. It is home of the Northern California Golf Association and is the first course in the country to be owned and operated by an amateur golf association.
The challenging layout is situated high above Pebble Beach Golf Links and features rolling terrain as the holes meander through majestic Monterey pines and cypress trees. Large, undulating greens put a premium on club selection and distance control, and there are many risk-and-reward holes. Poppy Hills offers scenic views of the Pacific Ocean. From 1991-2009, the course hosted the PGA Tour's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and was also site of the 1991 NCAA Men's Championships. A 13-month, $10 million course renovation was completed in 2014.
