Northwestern Shuts Out Wisconsin on Senior Day, 2-0

EVANSTON, Ill.—Grace Orndorff celebrated Senior Day with her first goal of the season and McKenna Angotti showed the promise of Northwestern's first year class as the Wildcats picked up a huge 2-0 victory over Wisconsin Sunday at Martin Stadium.

The Wildcats (8-6-2, 5-3-1) earned their second straight 2-0 win over a nationally regarded opponent with Wisconsin receiving votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches' top-25 poll. NU beat No. 23 Minnesota on Thursday.

The first year Angotti got Northwestern on the board with a left-footed shot from the left side in the 38th minute. Senior Kim Jerantowski hit junior Brenna Lovera with a long ball, who played Angotti through for a tidy finish. The score was the second of the year for Angotti.

Just two minutes later, the 'Cats struck again with the senior Orndorff recording her first goal of the season on the day she was honored pregame. Orndorff received a free kick feed from junior Marisa Viggiano and put Northwestern up 2-0. Viggiano now has six assists this season and 13 for her career, moving her into a tie for sixth with Kelsey Hans (2004-07) on the program's career assists list.

Senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem earned the 44th clean sheet of her career by recording five saves. Clem moved into a tie for seventh on the NCAA all-time leaderboard, joining Jill Mastroianni (Boston College, 2008-11), Kerri Butler (West Virginia, 2007-10), and Erin Guthrie (Rutgers, 2006-09).

On the other end, the Wildcats fired 14 shots at Clem's cousin, Caitlyn, the keeper for Wisconsin, getting two past for the winning margin.

Lovera took a team high four shots, and junior Hannah Davison and senior Maria Fayeulle added three each. Seven Wildcats took shots in all with Fayeulle leading the way with two on goal.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is unbeaten in its last four Senior Day games.

Northwestern had a majority of the possession in the first half, attacking the south goal with the wind at their backs. The backline kept Wisconsin in check, limiting the Badgers to just three weak shots in the half.

The second half played much the same as the first, with both teams scrapping it out in a game with 17 total fouls, and a pair of yellow cards that were given within a minute of each other. The game largely stayed between the boxes, with possession frequently changing at midfield. Wisconsin took its share of shots trying to scratch back in the game late but could not get anything by Clem and the NU defense as the team earned its sixth shut out win in 2017.

Chicago's Big Ten Team returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 21, when it hosts Nebraska at 6 p.m. for the Wildcats' final regular season home match.
