Wildcats Race to 19th Place Finish at Pre-Nationals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Northwestern maintained its momentum at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday with a 19th place finish out of 43 teams, highlighted by sophomore Aubrey Roberts' 34th best time in a field of over 280 seeded runners.
"Last year we were 39th in this race, so 20 spots up and wins over some key regional opponents make it a good weekend," head coach 'A Havahla Haynes said. "The race as a whole was a little faster than we expected or has happened in previous years, but the women responded well and didn't panic."
The Wildcats, ranked No. 5, in the Midwest region, finished ahead of Missouri, ranked No. 3 in the region and No. 24 nationally, and Creighton and South Dakota State.
Roberts led the 'Cats in the 6K at EP Tom Sawyer State Park with a 20:30.0 for her second top-50 finish at the Pre-Nationals in her career. Fellow sophomore Sarah Nicholson also posted a sub-21 minute 6K with a 20:56.4 that landed her a 70th place finish.
Haley Albers ran a 21:38.4 while Andrea Ostenso and Sara Coffey were not far behind with a 21.47.7 and a 21.49.0 respectively, to round out the 'Cats running under 22 minutes in the event.
"The goal was to run as a group through 4K then start to wind it up from there," Haynes said. "The team did just that through 4K with those in their respective groups within 5-10 meters of each other. When the move happened, everyone was able to go as a group, which helped keep the team score down."
Hannah Tobin and Isabel Seidel rounded out the field for Northwestern in the seeded race, running a 22:18.8 and a 23:22.2, respectively. First year Amanda Davis, running in the unseeded race also turned in a 22:54.9.
Northwestern is back in action for the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 29 in Bloomington, Ind. Five Big Ten teams are ranked in the national USTFCCA polls.
