Wildcats Battle Elite Competition at North American Cup

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Northwestern competed in the Div. I foil and sabre events against elite competition in the country on the first day of the October North American Cup in Anaheim, California on Friday, highlighted by top-64 finishes from Emine Yücel, Alexis Browne and Alexandra Banin,
 
Senior Emine Yücel and first year Alexis Browne paced the Wildcats in sabre, earning top-64 finishes with one direct elimination win each.
 
Yücel went 5-1 in pools and received a No. 23 seed before the direct elimination bouts, where she advanced through the first round with a dominant 15-3 win.
 
Browne won two pool bouts but upset Caroline Wang, who was seeded 50th in the main draw, 15-13, in the first round. Browne was downed 15-9 by the No. 15 seed Francesca Russo in the second round.
 
Sophomore Alexandra Banin earned a top-64 finish of her own in foil, after pulling off a 15-13 first round upset over the 30th seed in the draw, Anisha Kasi.
 
Junior Sharon Chen and first year Sofia Simontov were ranked 68th and 72nd, respectively entering the elimination bouts. Both fencers tallied three wins in their pools.
 
In sabre, junior Maddy Curzon and first year Isabella Min qualified for the main draw with two pool wins.
 
The Wildcats have the day off tomorrow before the two-day epee competition gets underway on Sunday.
