EVANSTON, Ill. – The Wildcats travel to Anaheim, California this weekend, where they will compete against the top fencers in the country at the October iteration of the North American Cup, a national-level USA Fencing Competition.

The four-day event starts on Friday and ends on Monday, with fencers competing in individual weapon group competitions. In the foil and sabre competitions, the top 32 fencers receive national rankings points while the top 64 fencers do so in epee.

"We're looking to carry the momentum from the Remenyik into the NAC," head coach Zach Moss said. "It will be a more challenging test and is a great opportunity for our team to continue to tune up in preparation for the college season."

Like other individual competitions, the foil and sabre group competitions will feature pools of six or seven fencers and direct elimination rounds featuring 75% of the total field.

The epee competition spans two days, featuring a preliminary set of pools and direct elimination bouts to narrow the field to 126 before the second day. Those 126 fencers will compete in a second set of pools to determine the 112 fencers who will square off in direct elimination bouts in the main draw. Direct elimination bouts in all three events will be 15-touch bouts.

The Wildcats are coming off a strong first event of the season at the Remenyik Open, highlighted by a second-place finish from Maddy Curzon in sabre, semifinal appearances from Amy Jia and Sharon Chen in foil, and a semifinal appearance from Ella Lombard in epee. Sophomore Pauline Hamilton also won the junior epee competition, with Northwestern sweeping the top four spots in the event.

Last year at the October NAC, Pauline Hamilton and Katie Van Riper posted top-16 finishes in epee while Maddy Curzon did so in sabre. Emine Yucel earned ranking points as well with a 31st place finish in sabre.

The foil competition starts Friday at 10 a.m. CT while sabre gets underway the same day at 2 p.m. The first day of the Epee event starts on Sunday at 7 p.m. with second day competition taking place all-day on Monday.

Live stats for the NAC can be found here.

In addition to the NAC, Sarah Filby and Yvonne Chart will be competing internationally at an individual foil World Cup competition in Cancun, Mexico on Friday. Filby is one of seven fencers representing Canada at the event while Chart is one of three from Great Britain. Live stats for the competition can be found here.
