EVANSTON, Ill. – The Wildcats return home to Martin Stadium this weekend looking to re-establish momentum in a tight Big Ten race. The Wildcats (6-6-2, 3-3-1) face off against No. 23 Minnesota Thursday at 8 p.m. on Big Ten Network and host (rv) Wisconsin on Senior Day this Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Northwestern will celebrate its seven seniors (Lauren Clem, Mackenzie Howe, Kassidy Gorman, Maria Fayeulle, Kim Jerantowski, Nikia Smith, and Grace Orndorff) during a pregame ceremony on Sunday. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to show their support and appreciation for the award-winning and record-breaking group.
Minnesota (9-2-3, 5-1-1) comes to Evanston on a five-game win streak and sits 23rd in the United Soccer Coaches' rankings, while Wisconsin (9-3-2, 3-2-2) comes to town after a 0-0 double-overtime draw against Indiana and will play at Illinois before arriving in Evanston. Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Northwestern stand at second, sixth, and seventh, respectively, in the Big Ten standings.
SERIES HISTORY
Northwestern has gone unbeaten against Minnesota in the last three meetings, winning by shutout in 2013 and 2014 before a 0-0 draw last season in Evanston when the Gophers were ranked No. 13 in the country. Minnesota leads the all-time series, 15-8-2, and holds a 7-4-1 advantage in Evanston. This will be the fourth straight contest played at Northwestern.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats' all-time series record against Wisconsin stands at 6-17-1 overall and 3-6-1 in Evanston. The teams' most recent meeting resulted in a 2-1 Wildcats' win in 2015.
SET PIECE SPECIALIST
Junior defender Kayla Sharples scored her third goal of the season at Ohio State on a corner kick in the 37th minute. Each of her three goals this year have come off set pieces as she rises high above the defense to head the ball into the back of the net. The goal at OSU was Sharples' sixth of her career, all coming as a central defender. Each of her goals have come since the start of 2016, and she has been the Wildcats' third-highest goal scorer in that time span. Sharples scored against Illinois last year, converting off yet another set piece to grab the game-winning -- and conference clinching -- goal in overtime.
SAVED BY CLEM
Senior All-American goalkeeper Lauren Clem made a season-high seven saves at No. 8 Penn State in the Big Ten opener on Sept. 14 and has made 58 saves this season, which ranks third in the conference. She also ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 4.46 saves per game in 2017. Clem sits at 310 saves for her career, the second-highest total in program history. She trails only Wendy Scholz (1994-97), the all-time Big Ten leader at 577.
