EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern junior and senior student-athletes took their skill and talent to the networking sphere last month, taking part in the fourth-annual NU for Life Job and Internship Reception.
The event, held on the Norris Center's scenic East Lawn, allowed Wildcat student-athletes the opportunity to discuss job and internship positions with industry leaders.
Over 83 employers from 35 companies — such as AQR, Accenture, Kemper Lesnik, City Year, Michael Page, United, and Vantiv — attended the reception, meeting over 60 Northwestern student-athletes.
Student-athletes received the opportunity to learn about different industries, as well as taking the first step forward to securing ever-valuable internship and entry-level jobs.
"It's so great to be able to get this opportunity," said volleyball junior Ashley Bush. "The chance to be able to network with some really impressive companies and people is such a benefit."
Wildcat alumni made also returned to campus for the event to recruit, including Allison Jacobsen (Cross Country '16), Monica McGreal (Volleyball '15), Alex Rucks (Football, '08) and Mihir Kumar (Tennis, '16), Lisa Loerzel (Field Hockey, '97), among others.
NU for Life, the sponsor of the event, is the athletic department's career enhancement and employer engagement department. Throughout a Northwestern student-athlete's career, they will receive one-on-one career consulting, informational interviews, as well as access to these internship and job opportunities.
Through NU for Life, student-athletes have the ability to accelerate their progression of career development. The Class of 2017 has already found post-graduation success, as 44 percent have secured full-time employment, while nearly 37 percent have enrolled in graduate school. Of those with full-time positions, over 30 percent are working in business services, more than 10 percent are in the financial sector, while nine percent are playing professional sports.
