EVANSTON, Ill. -- Five Wildcats are among the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athlete award winners for the 2016-17 season, the organization announced Tuesday. Student-athletes must have a 3.5 GPA or higher during the academic year to earn the honor.

Renee Ariola, Nicole Bond, Brooke Marquez, Sammy Nettling and Anna Petersen each picked up the award for NU. All five Wildcats also were named Academic All-Big Ten while Nettling and Petersen also earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors in 2017.

Petersen graduated in 2017 with a degree in mechanical engineering before beginning a job for Northrop Grumman working with Air Force defense technology.

Bond, who is returning to Northwestern for a fifth season after receiving a medical hardship waiver, graduated in 2017 with a degree in economics, a minor in business institutions and an integrated marketing communications certificate. She now is pursuing a master's degree in 2017-18.

Ariola (Human Communication Sciences), Marquez (Communication Studies) and Nettling (Communication Studies) will be seniors this spring for the #B1GCats.

All told, a record 7,351 softball student-athletes across seven membership divisions earned NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2016-17 academic year. NCAA Division I, with 1,843 honorees, had the most of any division.
