DURHAM, N.C. -- No. 25 Northwestern was narrowly denied a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, falling to No. 10 Duke, 4-3, in a regional round championship match as part of ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Northwestern jumped in front by taking the doubles point thanks to wins at Nos. 2 and 3. The 24th-ranked duo of Erin Larner and Lee Or topped Alyssa Smith and Chalena Scholl, 7-5, at No. 2 while Rheeya Doshi and Brooke Rischbieth defeated Samantha Harris and Rebecca Smaller in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3).
Wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles gave the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead in the match, but Alex Chatt finished off Smith for a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 5 and Erin Larner topped Harris 7-6 (5), 7-5 to bring the 'Cats within one point of victory.
The match came down to a pair of matchups that went to three sets. At No. 6, Smaller was able to outlast Nina Van Oost 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, leaving things to be decided by the contest at No. 2. Maddie Lipp, ranked No. 104, couldn't have battled 14th-ranked Meible Chi any closer, but Lipp fell in a pair of heartbreaking tiebreakers, falling 7-6 (11), 3-6, 7-6 (6).
Northwestern returns to action Feb. 3 when it takes on Vanderbilt in Nashville.
