EVANSTON, Ill. — The Canadian Lacrosse Association (CLA) and the senior women's national team coaching staff have announced Northwestern's Megan Kinna, Selena Lasota and Danita Stroup as selections to the 18-player roster that will represent Canada at this summer's 2017 FIL Women's Lacrosse World Cup in Guildford, England.
The Wildcats were selected to the 18-woman roster following a tryout in Syracuse, New York, this past weekend by the team's coaching staff.
The trio was a part of the Canadian U19 team that won the nation's first gold medal at the 2015 Rathbones FIL U19 World Championships.
Stroup scored nine goals and had 11 assists at the U19 World Championships before joining before the Wildcats last season as a junior transfer. She scored 22 goals in her debut campaign with the 'Cats, scoring in seven-straight games from April 17 to May 13 with five multi-goal games.
Lasota was named the MVP of the 2015 U19 World Championships after scoring scoring five points (3G/2A) in the gold-medal game versus the United States and finishing the tournament with 16 goals and 10 assists in six games. She also had 19 draw controls and eight ground balls in the tournament. A native of Campbell River, British Columbia, Lasota was the 2015 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and ILWCA Second-Team All-American after scoring a NU freshman single-season record 69 goals. She once again was a All-Big Ten selection and IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region selection as a sophomore after leading the Big Ten in goals during conference play. Lasota was second on the team with 50 goals and tied for the team lead with 67 points in 2016, becoming the fastest player in program history to reach 100 career goals.
Kinna finished the World Championships with five goals, four assists and 11 draw controls in the summer prior to her senior year of high school. She was named a 2016 Under Armour All-American and helped lead Team BC to three box lacrosse national championships in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Northwestern opens its 2017 season on Monday, January 30 at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium versus Canisius. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. and admission to the contest is free.
