PASADENA, Calif. –
Northwestern swept the field at the Western Invitational on Sunday at Caltech in Pasadena, Calif., going 7-0 in dual meet competition.

The Wildcats dominated their opposition to the tune of a 135-54 combined score on the day. They collected important wins over Stanford, Brandeis, and UC San Diego, who all received votes in the College Fencing 360 coaches' poll at the end of last season

Senior Alisha Gomez-Shah, sophomore Yvonne Chart, and freshman Pauline Hamilton led their weapon groups and all finished with over ten wins. Senior Stella Pointeau and juniors Emine Yucel and Sacha Bazzal also finished with nine wins each.

Northwestern has won 16 duals in a row and is now 16-4 on the year.

Northwestern started the invitational with two routs against Caltech, 24-3, and Florida, 27-0.  After those two contests, nine fencers had yet to lose, and Pointeau and junior Lucia Procopio were both 6-0.

NU battled Brandeis to a tough 15-12 victory behind a 3-0 performance from Chart. The squad breezed through the next bout, taking down Incarnate Word 23-4 with a 9-0 performance from the sabre group. After four bouts, Hamilton, Yucel and Bazzal all were 6-0 individually.

In the most anticipated matchup of the invitational, the Wildcats defeated West Coast powerhouse Stanford 15-12. With the bout tied at 9-9, the sabre group delivered the victory with a 6-3 showing thanks to Gomez-Shah, who went 3-0 and was 9-0 on the day at that point.

After a tight 16-11 win over Air Force, the #B1GCats finished the afternoon with some more late drama against UC San Diego. The bout was tied 9-9 heading into the sabre contest for the third time, but Gomez-Shah, senior Julia Abelsky and freshman Abby Tartell combined to go 6-3 once more to give the team a 15-12 victory and an undefeated finish on the day.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21, when it travels to the east coast for the Philadelphia Duals against another group of tough opponents.
