2016-17 Fencing Schedule

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern released the 2016-17 women's fencing schedule on Thursday, featuring eight regular season events, three North American Cup tournaments and three postseason tournaments.

Head coach Zach Moss takes over the defending Midwest Conference champions this season. The Wildcats placed eighth at the NCAA Championships last year for their 17th straight top-10 finish.

"We are really excited about this season's schedule," Moss said. "It is a great mix of competitions that will maximize our team's development."

The 'Cats open the season by hosting the annual Remenyik Open on Oct. 1-2. Due to ongoing construction on the Ryan Fieldhouse and Walter Athletics Center, the Remenyik will be held in Libertyville, Ill.

Chicago's Big Ten Team travels the next week to Detroit for the fall North American Cup on Oct. 7-10.

The Wildcats will face a tough early-season test when they head to the Elite Invitational at Penn in Philadelphia, Pa. on Nov. 5., where some of the nation's best teams will compete. NU has another dual the next week at the Vassar Invitational in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Nov. 13.

Northwestern kicks off 2017 with a busy January, starting with the winter NAC in Columbus, Ohio, Jan. 6-9. They then visit Cal Tech for the Western Duals on Jan. 15 before returning to Pennsylvania for the Philadelphia Duals on Jan. 21. The team wraps up the month in South Bend, Ind. with the DiCicco Duals on Jan. 28.

Northwestern hosts its second dual of the season, the NU Duals, on Feb. 4-5. That dual will be held in South Bend, Ind. for the second straight year with some of the best teams in the country in attendance. Last year, the 'Cats went 12-2 at the event with three wins over ranked opponents.

The 'Cats close out their winter slate of duals in Durham, N.C, on Feb. 12 with the Duke Duals. They then travel to Kansas City, Mo. Feb. 17-20 for another individual competition, the USA Junior Olympic Championships.

NU starts its postseason Feb. 25-26 with the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships in Columbus, Ohio. NU took home the MFC championship last season and continued its 22-year streak of top-three finishes.

The postseason rolls on as the team visits Detroit on March 11 for the NCAA Midwest Regional. The best fencers from the tournament will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. on March 25-26.
