
Wildcats Fall in Five to Ole Miss at Lipscomb Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Northwestern went up 2-0 on Ole Miss in the finale of the Lipscomb Invitational but couldn't fend off a rally, as the Rebels bounced back to win the final three sets.
Gabrielle Hazen led the way for the Wildcats (5-4) with 11 kills on .321 hitting. Symone Abbott had a team-high 16 kills. Kayla Morin added eight.
The Northwestern defense was strong for the second straight match, holding the Rebels to .220 hitting, while recording 11 blocks. Katie Kniep had 19 digs, and Caleigh Ryan added 13.
Overall, it was a balanced day across the board for the Wildcats with eight players recording digs, six getting blocks and six registering kills.
Chicago's Big Ten Team opened the match on a 10-2 run and held off a late charge from the Rebels to take the first set, 25-20. Ole Miss looked to have the second in control, up 24-20, but Northwestern fended off four set points and scored the final six points to take it 26-20.
Ole Miss came back strong, winning the third set, 25-9, and then took the fourth by a narrow 25-22 margin.
The Rebels held a 7-6 lead in the fifth and final set before going on an 8-1 run to end the match and clinch the win.
The Wildcats head to Cedar Falls, Iowa, next weekend for the Northern Iowa tournament, where they will take on North Dakota State, Syracuse and UNI.
