WUXI, China – Six Northwestern fencers traveled to China for three days in late August to participate in the Second Annual Absolute Collegiate Competition against Chinese, Korean and other American fencers.

The purpose of the tournament at the Absolute Fencing Center in Wuxi was to have a cultural exchange between the fencers from different countries and provide a chance to compete against different styles.

The athletes competed in a mixed men and women's team event split up by countries and in individual events for their weapon groups. Three NU fencers finished in the top eight in their respective groups.

Katie Van Riper placed third overall in the epee competition and narrowly lost 15-11 to Jessie Radanovich of Penn State, who won the 2016 NCAA individual championship in epee. Cindy Oh finished sixth in the saber event, while Yvonne Chart finished eighth in the foil bracket.

Alisha Gomez-Shah finished 11th, while Sacha Bazzal finished 15th in saber. Stefani Kahookele finished 16th in foil.

In the more relaxed mixed event, Northwestern joined with Columbia and Stanford and split into four teams. The team with Van Riper, Gomez-Shah and Chart took home the gold medal for the tournament with a Korean team in second and a Chinese team in third.

"It was a fun way to fence alongside U.S. fencers who are typically opponents," said Oh. "It was also fun to fence against different styles, and not just Americans."

The 'Cats wrapped their trip up with a tour of Wuxi. They returned to Evanston and are preparting for the start of the 2016-17 season.
