CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Northwestern completed its opening weekend sweep at the Cavalier Classic with a 3-1 win over host Virginia on Saturday night with another balanced offensive attack.

"Beating Virginia on their home floor was a big win for us, a big confidence-builder," head coach Shane Davis said. "It reassures everything that we are doing in our gym with working hard and playing as a team. I am very, very pleased with this weekend."

For the third straight match, the Wildcats (3-0) hit their way to victory with three players reaching double-digits in kills.

Outside hitter Symone Abbott led the way once again with 19, but it was the middles that put the pressure on the Cavaliers all match long. Gabrielle Hazen notched 10 kills, and Maddie Slater hit over .500, while racking up nine.

"The middles did an outstanding job for us," David said. "We were trying to get them involved as much as possible, and they did a great job of grinding it out and keeping our offense going."

Junior setter Taylor Tashima racked up a big assist total for the third straight time with 49. She moved into 10th place on the all-time assists list at Northwestern with No. 2,109, and she leaves the Cavalier Classic with 2,158, just 36 shy of ninth.

The Wildcats continued their dominance of the first set, jumping out to a big lead and winning the frame, 25-17. Northwestern outscored its three opponents this weekend 75-46 out of the gate.

After Virginia handed the 'Cats their first loss in a set this year, the team responded with a 10-3 run midway through a tight third set to pull away and gain the upper hand in the match.

Chicago's Big Ten Team scored six of the final eight points in the fourth frame to clinch the win. The Wildcats hit .400 to Virginia's .000 in the set.

"Virginia caught us on our heels a little bit," Davis said. "But we reset after that second set and responded in set three. During intermission, we told some jokes, and it helped us stay relaxed."

Northwestern now heads to the Dayton Invitational next weekend in Dayton, Ohio, where it will take on Chattanooga, Dayton and Xavier.
