No. 16 Wildcats Edged by No. 17 Terriers in Opener

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Dominique Masters scored the 41st goal of her career and 16th-ranked Northwestern out-shot No. Boston University, 14-6, but the Terriers edged the Wildcats 2-1 in the season-opener for both teams Friday afternoon.
Β
The contest was the first game of the Wildcat Classic being held on the campus of the University of New Hampshire.
Β
Northwestern recorded 10 shots on goal in the contest to only four for BU, but the 'Cats weren't quite able to overcome a two-goal deficit.
Β
NU controlled possession early on and earned a pair of penalty corners in the opening three minutes of the contest, but was unable to cash in. Meanwhile, the Terriers made the most of their limited chances. BU got on the board first at the 13:35 mark when Allie Renzi was able to find space in front of the cage following a pass from Kali Shumock. Renzi put home the goal to put the Terriers in front, 1-0.
Β
The Wildcats found themselves chasing the goal at the intermission despite holding a 7-3 edge in shots over the opening 35 minutes of play.
Β
Nearly 10 minutes into the second half, Northwestern had a good opportunity to tie the game, but Masters' deflection went just wide of the cage.
Β
Nearly 10 minutes later, BU was able to convert on another one of its limited chances when Amanda Cassera scored from a similar spot on the field as Renzi did, tallying a goal to increase the Terriers' lead to 2-0.
Β
With only 20 minutes remaining, the Wildcats needed to get things going in a hurry. Masters managed to cut the deficit in half at 55:36 when she drove the right end line and fired a rocket past Cammy Jensen from a difficult angle to make it 2-1.
Β
Northwestern kept the pressure on the rest of the way, and nearly tied it up with just under eight minutes left. The 'Cats earned a penalty corner, but were denied by the Terriers' defense just in front of the goal line.
Β
NU would earn one more penalty corner with a chance to tie the game with three minutes to go but were unable to get a shot off and BU held on.
Β
The Wildcats will be back in action at 10 a.m. Central time when they take on the loser of Friday's second match between UMass and New Hampshire.
