DALLAS, Texas – Northwestern had five fencers place at the USA National Championships in Dallas over the past weekend.
Sharon Chen and Amy Jia led the way for the Wildcats with third-place finishes at the annual July event.
Chen was third in the Division 1A women's foil after going 8-1 and advancing to the semifinals of the tournament stage. The incoming freshman Jia was third in the Division 2 women's foil. She posted an 8-2 mark with a 25-touch advantage through tournament play.
Yvonne Chart also scored a top-10 finish with her effort in the Division 1 women's foil. Chart was a perfect 5-0 in the pool stage and won her first seven bouts of the day before falling by a narrow 14-13 margin in the quarterfinals.
Rounding out the Wildcat placewinners were two more incoming freshman in Pauline Hamilton, who finished 22nd in the Division 1 women's epee and Alex Banin, who placed 25th in the Division 1A women's foil. Hamilton was 4-4 overall and nearly knocked off the No. 4 seed in the Table of 32 of the elimination bracket, while Banin also went 4-4 on the day.
The defending Midwest Conference champions return 24 fencers from last year's team and add seven talented incoming freshmen.
