Matsubara Wins California Women's State Championship

OJAI, Calif. – Wildcats rising sophomore Monica Matsubara won a three-hole playoff to capture the 2016 California Women's State Championship at Ojai Valley Golf Club.

Matsubara fired a 2-over 215 (71-69-75) through 54 holes, tied with 2016 Stanford NCAA Regional medalist and three-time First Team All-Big West honoree Andrea Wong, and three shots better than their closest competition. She did some of her most impressive work on the course's longest offerings, playing Ojai Valley's four Par-5 holes at 6-under during the tournament.
To settle the tie, the pair faced off head-to-head in a 3-hole, aggregate playoff where Wong shot 1-over and Matsubara countered at 1-under to secure the championship.
Matsubara is the second straight Wildcats golfer to win the title, and third in the last four years the tournament has been held at Ojai Valley. Rising sophomore Stephanie Lau, the 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, captured the championship in 2015 and recent graduate Kaitlin Park was the medalist in 2013.
The California Women's State Championship began in July of l996 with the first Championship being held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California.
The format has remained consistent since that first tournament, 54 holes of individual stroke play. The competition is scheduled in July each year so players of high school and college age can participate. Eligibility requirements are that a player be a female of any age, a California resident for at least 6 months of the year and have a USGA handicap index of no greater than 10.4.
