EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern's Christen Johnson of the women's basketball team and Max Chapman of the football program have been recognized by the Big Ten as Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2015-16 academic year. The pair was chosen from a group of more than 300 exemplary student-athletes who displayed positive sportsmanship throughout the year.
One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution. All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Johnson was an integral part of the Wildcats' squad over the last four years. She was a positive leader who demonstrated the ability to step in when needed and provide leadership both on and off the court. The Powder Springs, Georgia, native was a two-time captain for the Wildcats and appeared in over 60 games since arriving in Evanston in 2012. Johnson was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a double major in journalism and African American studies.
Johnson has served as a volunteer for several community service efforts, including S.A.A.C. Field Day, Rehab Institute of Chicago and Autism Speaks.
Northwestern's 2015 recipient of the traditional No. 1 jersey, which is given to the student-athlete who embodies the values and character of the Wildcats' football family, Chapman helped Northwestern win a regular-season program record 10 games last season. A member of the 2015 Leadership Council, Chapman appeared in all 13 games and was named an Academic All-Big Ten selection. Chapman graduated from Northwestern with a degree in communications studies and is currently working towards a master's degree in Sports Administration.
Chapman has served as the co-president of the ROAAR program the last two years and has been active in several community service efforts including Fuel up to Play 60, visits to the Lurie's Children's Hospital, Lift for Life, SAAC Canned Food Drive, while also volunteering at the Sheil Catholic Center and Connections for the Homeless.
